Pre-departure

So, I figured I better get one of these blog things to keep track of my trip to Costa Rica and keep all of you informed :). From what I have heard, it will probably be the most useful way to keep in touch with everyone because of the outrageous cell phone charges and lack of phone cards that actually work.
But where to start... well, for beginners, I will be travelling with my old journalism friend Katie Stern. I still can't figure out how I talked her into going on this crazy adventure with me, but I'm glad I did. We're leaving June 2, and should arrive in the capital of CR, San Jose, in midafternoon. We'll spend a night there and then travel on to our home for two weeks; Monteverde. It's a cloud forest and doesn't provide the sunny weather we had originally set out for, but we decided perhaps some nature, hiking, and fresh air would be good for us.
Above are a couple pictures of the cloud forest and an image of our apartment. The accomodations are a little nicer here than our second destination, which is Flamingo Beach. We'll be taking class in Flamingo, but our "bungalow" is located in Potrero Beach. Flamingo is supposed to be a resort location while Potrero is more true to the tico lifestyle.
This is a picture of what Katie and I will be sharing. But don't be fooled by the nice exterior.
The interior stays true to the "simple" life. But, we're right on the beach and there's great gardens around the hotel, so i doubt we'll be staying inside much.
It's not all about the beach and having a good time though. Katie and I will be taking classes Monday through Friday from 8 am (What!?) to noon. The only subject we'll be studying is Spanish (convenient) and we will complete 6 credit hours in only 5 weeks.
Overall, this is one of the most exciting things I've done thus far. The closer it gets, the more nervous I get, probably due to my mom reminding me everyday that I'm way too trusting, it's not the US, and not everyone is a good person.
Hopefully I will be able to update this fairly often. I have heard there are many internet cafe's around there, so that will be my best bet. Wish me luck!
